my story...so far

June 17, 2008 / by lindsay_297_yea

i am writing a short novel about vampires...i just started today. i was inspired by a movie called interview with a vampire staring brad pitt, tom cruise, and kristin dunst. it was filmed in 1994, the year i was born. the movie inspired a dream that i had about vampires. another inspiration for this was the vampire series written by stephanie meyer. here is it so far (written from the character Lily's point of view)

“Ouch!” cried Lesley. She started screaming savagely. “Ugh, when is it over?” “The transformation is famous for being excruciating,” explained Chloe. “Just try to calm down. Oh…it looks like the venom is passing through quickly...it should be over soon. Once your heart stops-” “I DON’T NEED A LESSON! Just shut up for God’s sakes!”

She started screaming again. It hurt just to look at her. Then all of a sudden she went rigid. “Oh, God,” she said...quieter than a whisper. Her heart was stopping.

Then...she startled me by sitting up, her eyes wide open and bloodshot. She was staring at me with such an intensity that I had to immediately look away.

“I could feel the venom coursing my body! It was the worst thing I’ve ever felt. Then...I had this moment...just as my heart stopped I felt as though I had sprouted wings...and I could go anywhere and do anything. It was the only bearable part of this whole thing.”

“So, what was it like?” I said trying to keep Lesley occupied because I knew I was going to be next. “Well, Lily, I guess you’ll find out. Who’s gonna do it?” she asked Chloe. “I will. Being as how you’re really young, and new at being a vampire, I am a lot stronger than you. Now, Lily,” she said turning to me. “Are you sure that you want to do this? It’s a terrible, terrible way to be. You would have to leave your parents, school, friends, except us of course, and just the fact that you really can’t legally exist.” “I’m sure.” I was not sure, but I had to get it over with. “Here we go,” said Chloe. “Here we go,” I repeated under my breath.

She came at me so fast I couldn’t react. Her huge fangs sinking into my flesh in my neck. I could feel my blood being sucked out of every inch of my body. The life draining from my face.

Then all of a sudden, Chloe’s grip loosened, and I thought it was over. I was wondering why Lesley was screaming so loud. Quick as a flash, her hold on my neck tightened. Instead of a sucking, draining feeling as before, I felt a hot liquid pulsing through my now empty veins. It was searing through my limbs. I thought my body was going to burn up from the inside out. The pain was unbearable. I felt a scream building up inside my throat. I couldn’t hold onto it any longer and I let it out. I screamed bloody murder and I could feel my throat burning as I did.

“Shhh. Calm yourself, Lily! People will hear you. You really don’t want people snooping around here, do you?” That was the first time I had realized that her huge fangs were no longer deep in my neck.

Then, as quick as it had started, the burning stopped...along with my heart. It was the most exhilarating seventy-three seconds of my life. I had an epiphany! Kinda ironic being as how I was in the process of becoming such an unholy creature. Then I sat up, eyes wide open, as though I was seeing for the first time. My movements were so fast that my mind had to catch up with my body. “I’m hungry,” I said...and so it begins.

A new life begins

You’ll eat soon enough, hon,” Chloe reassured me. “So, is there any info you can give us...tricks of the trade?” asked Lesley. “Never under any circumstances drink dead blood. It’s poison to us. As soon as the heart stops, get out of there.” “What about the whole stake through the heart thing? Myth or truth?” I wondered. “Myth! Stupidest thing I’ve ever heard! It’s very hard to kill a vampire. Aside from dead blood, we’re practically invincible.” “What about coffins?” asked Lesley. "Fact...well rather we have a choice.” Then I asked “What about sunlight?” “Um...both. It doesn’t like burn us or anything...but it does have an effect on us. Come see for yourselves.”

We walked out into the sunlight...it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Our skin was sparkling like a million diamonds strung together. The sunlight had a tingling feeling on my skin. It was so cool! “Why does this happen?” I asked. “I don’t really know...it sure as hell is interesting though, huh?” “Uh, duh!” exclaimed Lesley. “Well, what do you think?” asked Chloe. “That question is not fair! There are no words to describe it...” I said astonished. “I know...isn’t this great?” Chloe asked. “But you must know that there are a great number of downsides to being a vamp. For instance...like I said before, you can’t exist. The only way that you can have a boyfriend is if you change him, and you can’t be sure that it’ll last. Oh, and you can’t have kids. Just to name a few...but who needs kids anyway!” Chloe explained.

“Hey, I kinda like kids,” said Lesley. She’s kind of a softie. “You’re fourteen now...how are you gonna have a kid?” I asked. “Geez...someone woke up on the wrong side of the coffin...” Lily said sarcastically, while cracking up laughing at her own joke.

“Haha...oh my God, that’s so freakin hilarious,” started Chloe, “Do you think that this lifestyle is easy? Because if you do then you sure as hell have a big shocker coming at you. The only reason I changed you was because you begged me, and I was hungry, and I was lonely. That’s not the point.”

“You’re such a hypocrite!” I exclaimed. “You coaxed us into this. And you were always talking about how fun it was, and exciting it was to hunt. And like you said, you were hungry, and lonely...we didn’t beg.”

“Badass...I like it,” said Lesley approvingly, while laughing. “Shut up, Lesley!” Chloe and I said together. Lesley kinda shrank back, humbled. “Okay, look, we’re gonna be stuck with each other for...well, a pretty long time, so let’s make the best of it, and not start fighting already...agreed?” I asked. “Agreed,” they both said. “Good...now I’m hungry...what are you gonna do about that, Chloe?” I asked. “Let’s go get something to eat,” she made sure that we could see her air quotes on “eat”. “Oh, good!” exclaimed Lesley.

My first kill

“Now you can’t be too picky...but you have to choose someone who is like...single, homeless, who has no family, someone who won’t be missed too awfully much. That is only for killing humans. You don’t want to kill humans unless utterly necessary. Our main source for food will be large animals.”

She led us to a huge farm where there were loads of animals. I tried to run away and jump at one, but Chloe held me back. “Let me go!” I shouted at her. “Lesley help me!” Chloe shouted. “No, I want some too,” Lesley said. “JUST WAIT!” Chloe said. “Go over to that barn, but be quiet, you don’t want them to hear us do you?” “Okay,” said Lesley. “Fine,” I said.

We started creeping toward the barn and when we got there, we found it full of cows. We were so excited. I buried my fangs into the first one I found. The blood flowed into my mouth with incredible speed. It tasted so...sweet and yet salty and succulent...no taste on earth could describe it.

As soon as I was done with it, I said, “Whoa. The taste, the smell, the essence.” “Yes. It is truly amazing. Human blood is much better. One day you’ll find that out,” Chloe said.

“Oh, that’s horrible!” said Lesley. “If you get desparate, then that’s what you’re going to have to do!” growled Chloe. “Hey,” I said, “now let’s remember what we said about not fighting.” I tried to calm them down but it just made Chloe even more angry.

She started rambling on about how she used to have a normal life until that jerk Sam Catchings changed her. She wouldn’t shut up about it and it just made Lesley more irritated. For the first time in her life, Lesley lashed out at her.

“You know what your problem is? You think that you can just do whatever you want because you’re the oldest. I have opinions too. So does Lily, so I suggest that you back off and let us state our ideas! It’s not always about you. You didn’t have a family or anything like that before so you didn’t have anyone to leave. I have parents, friends, family, and everyone else I care about. I did this for you.”

She was so out of breath that she nearly fell down while Chloe just looked dumbfounded. She couldn’t believe anyone talking to her like that, especially a pacifist like Lesley. For the first time she was humbled. “I’m sorry...I don’t know what came over me,” Lesley tried to explain. “No, I’m sorry.” Chloe sounded really unsure. She had never apologized for her actions before. “I have been horrible to you guys. I’m sorry.”

Interesting so far. It's quite imaginative. I look forward to reading more of your posts. Thanks for sending me an invitation to add you to my friends list.

I appreciate fiction, though I write almost exclusively non-fiction, spiritually-centered essays. I'm in the early stages of studying to be a Catholic priest with the Basilians, as my profile page says. I've devoted my blog to writing about my own faith experience, the lives of saints (I particularly enjoy studying St. Therese of Lisieux), social justice issues, and much more...

Anyway, I'm glad I came across your blog. I'll be back again!
